Cal Duo Named ITA Doubles Team of the Year
June 9, 2003
BERKELEY - California's Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones and Rice's Richard and William Barker have been named the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Doubles Teams of the Year, the ITA announced.
Cal's Fusano and Kops-Jones captured the NCAA doubles title last month. They were named ITA National Doubles Team of the Month for March and April and went 37-10 on the season to finish No. 3 in the final Omni Hotels national doubles rankings. Fusano and Kops-Jones also reached the semifinals at the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships in November. Fusano is a senior from Placerville, Calif., and Kops-Jones is a junior from Fresno, Calif.
Rice's Barker twins completed one of the most successful seasons in men's doubles play in recent years. They reached at least the semifinals in all three national tournaments and won the title at the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships. Their 38-2 season included a 35-match win streak. The natives of Solihull, England, finished at No. 1 in the final Omni Hotels national doubles rankings.
The ITA National Doubles Team of the Year award goes annually to the team that has had the most outstanding year, as determined by the ITA. Both teams will be honored at the ITA All-Star Outing and Awards Luncheon, presented by the Nick Bollettieri Academy, on Aug. 22 in New York, along with the ITA National Players of the Year, the Arthur Ashe/ITA Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winners (for Division I) and several of the top-ranked collegiate players from all ITA divisions in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which is based in Skillman, N.J., administers several national and regional championship events, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA, and the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings for men's and women's tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship. The official ITA web site is www.itatennis.com.
