June 11, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State Head Women's Basketball Coach Sherri Murrell has announced the hiring of Sarah Allen, who played collegiate ball at Dayton and Arizona State, to her staff Wednesday. Allen will fill the newly created position of Director of Basketball Operations.
'I'm thrilled to have Sarah join our staff,' Murrell said. 'She is an outstanding person and a hard-worker. Her enthusiasm and desire will help us build a solid program now and in the future.'
Allen's primary responsibility will be to serve as the team's travel coordinator. In addition, she will handle all facility scheduling and arrange community service and promotion engagements for the staff and team.
'I am excited and grateful to be the program's first Director of Basketball Operations,' Allen said. 'Across the board, Cougar Athletics sets a standard for excellence and I want to do all I can to help women's basketball be a part of that.
'Coach Murrell and her staff have already taken a huge step forward and I am looking forward to being a part of the bright future here at WSU,' Allen added.
Allen comes to Pullman after spending the past two seasons as a guard for the Dayton Flyers basketball team. Allen started all 28 games for the Flyers during the 2002-03 season, averaging 8.2 points a contest.
The previous year, Allen led Dayton in scoring (13.0 points/game) as the Cincinnati, Ohio native was second in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 36th in the nation in three-pointers made per game (2.48).
Allen transferred to Dayton from Arizona State after the 2001 season. While at ASU, Allen played for current WSU assistant coach Mark Lewis, who was an assistant at ASU from 1996-2001. As a Sun Devil, Allen was selected to the All-Pac-10 Freshmen Team after the 2000 campaign.
During each of the past four summers, Allen has worked as a counselor and coach at various basketball camps. Most recently she served as an assistant director at the WSU camp during the summer of 2002.
