Day Two of NCAAs Adds Two Qualifiers For Track & Field

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams were back in action on Thursday morning at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Wildcats competed only during the morning session with athletes in the women's pole vault and men's discus.
Juniors Amy Linnen and Connie Jerz were the first Wildcats to compete on Thursday morning in the women's pole vault. Both competed in the second of two flights to narrow the field down to sixteen qualifiers. Linnen and Jerz both qualified for the final after clearing 13 feet, 1 ï¿½ inches (4.00m).
In the men's discus, sophomore Sean Shields and senior Rich Legarra took to the field for the Arizona men. Shields and Legarra both competed in the first of three flights. Shields was 15th with a throw of 178 feet, 5 inches (54.32m), falling just short of qualifying for the final. Legarra did record a mark after three fouls.
Arizona will be represented in two finals during Friday's action. Ilona Rutjes will compete in the women's discus final (2 p.m. PT), while Sean Shields will throw in the men's shot put final (7:30 p.m. PT).
