Pre-CWS Press Conference Quotes
Head Coach Mark Marquess' opening statement
'We are thrilled to be here. It never gets old. When you get together for your first team meeting of the year to get back to the College World Series is your goal, a lofty goal. In the early part of this season, we weren't even sure we were going to finish in the top part of our conference. We were 3-5 and had just been swept by a great Cal State Fullerton team and lost two-of-three to Florida State. We found out what areas we needed to improve in after those two series and got better after that. We've had some contributions by freshmen, but the key to our season has been our older players. Catcher Ryan Garko has had a career year, while junior outfielder Carlos Quentin and junior pitcher John Hudgins have also had excellent seasons. Those three players provided the leadership, helped right the ship and played really solid, especially in the second half of the season. I'm really proud of this group. It has been a little bit of a surprise as a coach. It's nice when you get surprised this way. This is a special group. The team chemistry is really good, and we're just thrilled to be here.'
Head Coach Ray Tanner's opening statement
'Last year was my first trip to the College World Series as a head coach. This event was more than I could ever imagine. We did not win the championship, but it was a tremendous venue and an experience for our student-athletes to be a part of. To get an opportunity to come back a year later is a tremendous thrill. Our players were at a point in the middle of this season where we were not sure if we were going to be playing in own conference tournament, but we were able to play some pretty good baseball down the stretch and win enough games to make it possible. We're delighted and excited to be back this year.'
