Rutjes Scores Big in Discus for Track & Field

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The third day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships was highlighted by two throwers for the University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams. Junior Ilona Rutjes competed in the women's discus final during the afternoon session, while sophomore Sean Shields took the ring for the men's shot put during the evening session.
Rutjes started the day off with a big throw, which ended up being her best of the competition. She opened up with a throw that measured 177 feet, 3 inches (54.02m), good enough for fifth place. She scored the only points for the UA women heading into the final day of competition. Arizona is currently 28th with four points.
In the men's shot put final, Shields finished 10th and was unable to earn a spot in the final for three more attempts. Shields opened up with a throw of 59 feet, 1 ï¿½ inches (18.02m). He fouled his next two throws and did not get to the final three rounds.
The Wildcats conclude competition at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, June 14. Juniors Amy Linnen and Connie Jerz will compete in the women's pole vault final (6 p.m. PT) , while junior Beth Hoge and freshman Robert Cheseret will run in the 5,000 meters final (women - 8:40 p.m. PT, men - 9 p.m. PT).
