21 Bears Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

BERKELEY - Cal was well represented on the 2003 Pac-10 All-Academic rowing teams, with 21 Golden Bears earning the honor.

For the men's team, junior Jesse Bauman and senior Joseph Manion led the way, as eight members of the squad were named to the first team. Bauman recorded a 3.79 GPA as a mechanical engineering major, while Manion finished with a 3.50 GPA as a political science major. Seniors Magnus Fleming (3.33 GPA, mass communications), Janik Gasiorowski (3.37 GPA, integrative biology), Cristopher Kennelly (3.08, interdisciplinary studies), Mladen Stegic (3.08 GPA, economics) and Michael Wallin (3.10 GPA, political science) also earned first team honors, along with junior Max Fresca 3.33 GPA, undeclared). In addition, junior Shawn Ghatan, sophomore Ian McGowan and junior Mathew Todd received honorable mention notice.

On the women's side, five Cal rowers were given first team honors, while five others were named to the second team. Senior Shelle Orem earned a first team selection with a 3.90 GPA in sociology. She was joined on the top unit with fellow seniors Kate Goodman (3.72 GPA, conservation & resource studies) and Hilarie Martin (3.52 GPA, molecular & cell biology), Erin Sanford (3.52 GPA, political science), and junior Andrea McDermott (3.50 GPA, English). Senior Khobi Brooklyn (3.04 GPA, political science), junior Ariana Canova (3.14 GPA, architecture), sophomore Karin Clifton (3.13 GPA, undeclared), junior Martha Helegeland (3.03 GPA, geography) and junior Ashley Peterson (3.18 GPA, molecular & cell biology) all received recognition with second team honors.
