Former Volleyball Standout Gina Schmidt Named To Canadian National Team
June 17, 2003
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Former Oregon State volleyball standout Gina Schmidt is among the 15 athletes selected to the Canadian National Team, which was announced after a weeklong training camp earlier this month.
A native of Beaverlodge, Alberta, Schmidt earned a spot on the national team as one of two setters, although she had played as an outside hitter for the last six years, including four at OSU from 1998-2001. She was a first team All-Pacific-10 outside hitter in 2000, and she finished her collegiate career as one of five Beavers with 1,000 career kills and digs. Her 1,366 kills are the third most by an OSU player, and she ranks seventh with 1,142 career digs.
Schmidt, who played professionally in Switzerland last year, and her 14 new teammates will train in Winnipeg at least through December. Team Canada will head to Mexico at the end of this month to compete in the Pan Am Cup. The team is also scheduled to play in July's Grand Prix in Italy and in September's NORCECA tournament in Puerto Rico. In December, the team will travel to the Dominican Republic for the Olympic Qualifier.
