June 18, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA women's track & field head coach Jeanette Bolden, for the seventh consecutive season, has been named the Pac-10 Women's T & F Coach of the Year and Bruin junior Lena Nilsson, for the second year in a row, has been named the Pac-10 Women's T & F Athlete of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
It's Bolden's ninth Pac-10 coaching honor in the last 10 years. In 2003, the UCLA women won their seventh consecutive Pac-10 title (a total of eight league titles in Bolden's 10 years as head coach), with a 155-140 victory over Stanford. The Bruin women were the NCAA West Region champions and also finished eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships held last week in Sacramento.
Nilsson, a junior from Vallentuna, Sweden, won the 800m (2:03.86) and set a new meet record in the 1500m (4:13.21), becoming the Pac-10's individual winner for two consecutive years (the first woman in conference history to win the 800m/1500m two years in a row). At last week's NCAA Outdoor Championships, Nilsson took second in the 1500m (4:09.86). She earned her first outdoor All-American honor this season and her third overall, including indoor and cross country. In her career, Nilsson is a three-time NCAA distance champion (2003 Indoor 800m/2002 Outdoor 1500m, 2002 Indoor DMR) and school record-holder in both the 800m (2:02.26) and 1500m (4:07.69).
