Duffy Qualifies for 1500m Finals at USATF Jr. Championships

University of California track and field athlete Bridget Duffy qualified for Sunday's 1500-meter final at the USA track and Field Junior Championships. Stanford hosts the championships at Cobb Track and Angell Field through Sunday.
Duffy finished fifth overall and third in heat one of the 1500m with a time of 4:31.83. Fellow Golden Bear, Antonette Carter also competed Saturday and finished fourth in the long jump with a lifetime best mark of 19-11. That mark is the ninth-best in Cal's history.
Golden Bear hurdler Ahmad Wright competed in the USATF Championships in the 400m hurdles, finishing 16th with a time of 51.34. Former Bears, Grace Upshaw, Bevan Hart and Elissa Riedy also competed in the championships. Upshaw captured the women's long jump title with a mark of 21-9.50. The top three finishers in each event that have met the qualifying standard will represent the U.S. at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, France in July. After the first day of the decathlon events, Hart's individual results were as follows: 100m (11th, 11.20); LJ (12th, 22-4.25); SP (9th, 44-4.75); HJ (8, 6-5); 400m (8, 50.00). Riedy finished 12th in the 1500m in 4:28.44.
Sunday's competition includes Carter and Jacqueline Earls in the 100m, Kevin Davis in the 3000m steeplechase and Abadir Barre in the 5000m events of the USATF Junior Championships. Hart continues in the decathlon event of the senior championships.
