UCLA Women's Track & Field NLI Signings

June 24, 2003

UCLA women's track & field head coach Jeanette Bolden on Tuesday announced five National Letter of Intent signings, all incoming freshmen for the upcoming fall quarter.

These five athletes join MacKenzie Hill, standout hurdler and relay participant at Long Beach Wilson HS, who signed with the Bruin last winter.

UCLA's new recruits are -

-Alison Costello (Esperanza HS) - a first-team Los Angeles Times All-Star Girls Track & Field Team performer in the 1600m/3200m, Costello was third in the 1600m at the CA State meet in a personal-best 4:53.74. This spring, she also won the 1600m/3200m at the CIF Div. I and Masters meets. A talented all-around distance runner, Costello placed at the State cross country championships last fall.

-Dianna Gooden (Long Beach Wilson HS) - teammate of MacKenzie Hill, Gooden is a 100m hurdles/400m hurdles standout who can also run on the 400m/1600m relays. A second-team Los Angeles Times choice on Wilson's 1600m relay (that finished second at State), Gooden also placed in the 100m hurdles/300m hurdles at the State meet. At the recently concluded U. S. Junior meet, Gooden placed sixth in the 400m hurdles (1:01.47/1:01.32 in qualifying).

-Georgea Richards (Sir Wilfrid Laurier SS/London, Ontario, Canada) - specializes in the sprints, hurdles and jumps and will be a heptathlete at UCLA. Placed third in both the 100m hurdles and long jump at the London, Ontario High School Championships.

-Danielle Smith (Mullen HS/Denver, CO) - At the 2003 CO State meet, Smith won the shot put (41-3) for the second year in a row and was second in the discus (129-6). As a junior at the State meet, her shot put winning mark was 42-1 and she was third in the discus (123-10). Helped lead Mullen HS to the 2003/2002 CO State track & field titles.

-Renee Williams (Skyline HS/Oakland) - one of the nation's top prep long jumpers, Williams won the CIF and CA State (20-10) long jump titles and was also a State qualifier in the 100m. At the 2003 U. S. Junior meet, Williams placed second (20-2.50w, +2.7) in the long jump and will join the USA Junior Team at the 2003 Pan Am Junior Championships, July 18-20 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
