Andersson, Nash Sign with California
June 26, 2003
BERKELEY - California women's golf coach Nancy McDaniel announced today the signing of Sofie Andersson, a member of the Swedish national team, and Danielle Nash to compete for the Golden Bears beginning with the 2003-04 school year.
Andersson comes to Cal after spending her freshman season at Mississippi State, where she helped lead the Bulldogs to a 12th-place showing at the NCAA East Regional. The second team All-SEC selection finished the 2002-03 season ranked No. 72 nationally by Golfweek. A product of Angelholm, Sweden, Andersson has been a member of her country's national team since 1999 and has helped lead the squad to a silver and bronze medal at the 2001 and 2002 European Team Championships, respectively.
'Sofie was a highly regarded player in the competitive SEC Conference,' said McDaniel, the 2003 NCGA National Coach of the Year. 'A player like that can always help our team. She brings a whole new dimension to Cal from her ties to the Swedish Golf Federation, which is known world-wide.'
Nash competed at St. Francis High School in Sacramento where she helped her team continue a string of six consecutive Northern California Golf Championships. Individually, Nash was an All-Metro league selection as a junior, an All-Delta League pick as a senior and a four-time member of the Nor-Cal team. Current Bear Sarah Huarte and recently-graduated Amber Reilly also attended St. Francis.
The product of Roseville, Calif., is the two-time defending California State Fair junior champion and spends her summers playing tournaments in Northern California.
'Danielle comes from St. Francis High School, which breeds great kids and athletes,' said McDaniel, whose team has competed in three straight NCAA Tournaments. 'She falls into that category. She'll have a chance to compete for playing time immediately.'
