Jeff Clement Named To 2003 USA Baseball National Team

LOS ANGELES -- USC catcher Jeff Clement (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown HS) was named today to the official 20-man roster for the 2003 USA Baseball National Team. The team was selected from a pool of 36 players that completed a four-day trials process in Tucson, Ariz. The team will represent the United States in August in the Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Clement becomes the 12th Trojan to be named to the USA National Team, following previous players Sid Akins (1984), Mark McGwire (1984), Brad Brink (1985), Bret Barberie (1988), Geoff Jenkins (1994), Randy Flores (1994), Jacque Jones (1995-96), Eric Munson (1997-98), Seth Davidson (1998), Mark Prior (2000) and Anthony Reyes (2000-01).
Last year in his freshman season at USC, Clement batted .298 with 21 home runs and 53 RBI and earned Collegiate Baseball National Co-Freshman of the Year honors. He also earned Baseball America Freshman All-America first team honors and was named Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year. His 21 home runs were the most by any freshman in USC history. Clement started in all 56 games with 42 starts as the catcher and 14 as the designated hitter.
He led the Trojans in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, total bases, runs and walks. He recorded two or more home runs in a game five times during the season and hit three home runs with seven RBI on May 16 vs. Washington State. Clement was named Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week twice during the season.
