Oregon Wrestling Completes Signing Class
June 30, 2003
EUGENE - The Oregon wrestling team completed its recruiting class with a total of six wrestlers joining the ranks for the 2003-04 season. In addition to Stewart Bogart and Aaron Pedeferri, who both signed during Oregon's 2002-03 campaign, the Ducks will add Joey Bracamonte, Nate Gipson, Cyle Hartzell and Joey Lucas to the lineup.
'We are very excited about the addition of this All-American recruiting class to our program,' head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'To be able to continue to successfully recruit student-athletes of this caliber who have the work ethic, desire and toughness to compete at the highest levels both athletically and academically says a lot about what we are doing as a program.'
Coming out of high school, Bracamonte was a sought-after recruit from Albuquerque, N.M. He spent his first year at Lassen Community College in California before sitting out this past season. In his freshman year at Lassen, Bracamonte, who won three state championships in high school, earned a fifth-place finish at the national junior college championships at the 157-lb. weight class.
Gipson, a prospect at 141 from Central Point, Ore., placed three times at the state championships. Bogart, a nationally-ranked wrestler from Shawnee Mission, Kan., will also compete at 141 this season for the Ducks.
Hartzell, a two-time state champion from Redmond, Ore., will join the Ducks this season at 149. Hartzell was originally scheduled to join the team for the 2002-03 season, but sat out last year and will begin competition this fall.
Lucas, a state champion from Hillsboro, Ore., and Pedeferri, a native of Cedarcrest, Wash., each will compete at either 125 or 133. The six wrestlers combined for 10 state championships in high school.
'All of these student-athletes will contribute immediately with several of them really making an impact as soon as this next season,' Kearney said.
