Pac-10 to Launch Educational Initiative In Fall 2003

June 30, 2003

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- The Pacific-10 Conference will announce a new Pac-10 Education Initiative at Pac-10 Football Media Day on July 30, 2003, in Los Angeles. The Initiative is scheduled to launch in September 2003, and awareness of the program will be driven with television public service announcements that promote the value of education and academic achievement.

The Initiative is a focused effort by the Conference to assist elementary and middle school teachers to provide a solid educational foundation for students. At the core of the effort is a co-branded 'Kids College' web-based learning program that will be available online to every K-8 classroom in the four-state Pac-10 region. The program captivates and motivates children using familiar sports games with the Pac-10's teams and their mascots included.

As students play interactive sports games, exciting new levels of game play and challenging, standards-based math and language questions are unlocked. Coaches provide directions and tips. A real-time reporting tool allows teachers to track the academic progress of each student.

Each of the Pac-10's member institutions will have its own segment in the program that allows a student to explore the institution through a virtual tour of the campus. The program will be available in English and Spanish, and a CD-ROM version of the program will be available at retail for home use.

'The Pac-10 Education Initiative provides classrooms with a learning tool teachers can use daily to motivate students,' said Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. 'Not only will students learn math, language and character while playing exciting sports activities, these students will learn about our Conference, its universities, and the value of higher education.'

Kids College is a product of Birmingham, Alabama, based Learning Through Sports, LLC. 'Our company is very excited to be affiliated with the prestigious 'Conference of Champions' and its member institutions,' said CEO Brian Shulman. 'Drawing from our program's strengths and our product's history of success in K-8 classrooms across the country, we are confident that this initiative will have an immediate and resounding impact on both individual students and education as a whole.'
