Jason David Named To Thorpe Watch List

July 7, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State cornerback Jason David was among 37 student-athletes named to the 2003 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list.

David, a 5-8, 165-pound senior, was the national leader in interceptions per game last season, tallying seven picks in 10 games. The Covina, Calif., native earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention.

The Thorpe Award is presented annually to the nation's best college defensive back. It is named after one of football's greatest all-around athletes, Jim Thorpe, who excelled as a running back, quarterback, and kicker, in addition to his duties in the secondary.

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists Nov. 3 and then to three finalists Nov. 24. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show Dec. 11. The official presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City, Okla. Feb. 9.

David was one of four Pac-10 players to earn mention on the list, along with Oregon safety Keith Lewis, and Arizona State's duo of cornerback R.J. Oliver and safety Jason Shivers.
