2002-03 Women's Swimming Year in Review

July 9, 2003

Five Pac-10 teams finished in the top-10 at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala. USC (284.0) paced the Pac-10 with a third-place finish. STANFORD was sixth (275.5), followed by CALIFORNIA (8th, 215.0), ARIZONA (9th, 209.0) and ARIZONA STATE (10th, 135.0). In all, Pac-10 institutions won three individual titles.

California's Natalie Coughlin earned Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year honors for the third consecutive year. Coughlin, a junior from Concord, Calif., was outstanding at the NCAA Championships. She broke pool records in the 100-yard butterfly (50.62) and 100-yard backstroke (50.92), to secure her third consecutive NCAA Championship titles in those events. At the Pacific-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., Coughlin broke her own American, NCAA and Cal school record in the 100-yard freestyle (47.42).

UCLA's Kim Vandenberg was named Newcomer of the Year. Vandenberg, a freshman from Moraga, Calif., is the first Bruin to ever earn Newcomer of the Year honors. At the NCAA Championships she was UCLA's top finisher, placing fifth in the 200 fly. Vandenberg finished second in the 200 fly and fourth in the 100 fly at the Pac-10 Championships, helping UCLA capture its second ever Conference title.

UCLA's Cyndi Gallagher was named Coach of the Year. Gallagher led the Bruins to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. At the championships, the swimmers placed as high as fifth and 10th in the 200 fly and 50 free, respectively. At the Pac-10 Championships, Gallagher's Bruins finished first, winning their second Conference title in three years. The women's swimming Coach of the Year award is the second of Gallagher's career.

USC's Blythe Hartley was named Pac-10 Diver of the Year for the second consecutive season, while the Sun Devils' Trisha Tumlinson was named Newcomer of the Year. Harley, a sophomore from North Vancouver, British Columbia, became only the second woman in Pac-10 history to sweep all three events at the Conference Championships. Tumlinson, a sophomore transfer from Spring, Texas, finished third on the platform at the NCAAs, becoming the first ASU diving All-American in three years.

Hongpong Li garnered the third Coach of the Year honors of his career. Li, in his fourth year at USC, helped lead the Trojans to three Pac-10 individual titles and six top-eight finishes. The USC swimming and diving team took third overall at both the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships.
