Larish Hits Grand Slam To Help Lift Team USA To Win Over Mexico

July 17, 2003

Durham, N.C. -- Arizona State junior-to-be Jeff Larish's grand slam homer capped a four-run fourth inning and Brent Lillibridge (OF, Fr., Washington) also added a three-run shot as the USA Baseball National Team opened up its five-game series vs. Mexico with a 8-2 win. Team USA improved to 13-0 on the summer with Thursday's win in front of 3,375 fans at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Larish went 1-for-4 in the opener of the annual Friendship Series against Mexico and is hitting .244 (11-for-45) with two home runs and eight RBI during the summer season. Larish set the ASU single-season record with four grand slams in 2003 to help ASU break the NCAA record with 14 grand slams. ASU teammate Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-5 vs. Mexico, but is still third on the team in hitting at .292 (14-for-48) with three doubles and is flawless in the field in his 13 starts at shortstop.

Justin Orenduff (RHP, So., Virginia Commonwealth) earned his third win of the season and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before a lead off single by Carlos Sosa. Orenduff worked six and 2/3 innings finishing with eight strikeouts and allowed two runs on two hits. Matt Campbell (LHP, So., South Carolina) pitched the final two and 1/3 innings and struck out four batters for Team USA.

After a scoreless first inning, Team USA surged ahead with a four-run second inning capped by Lillibridge's second home run of the summer. Micah Owings (IF, Fr., Georgia Tech) led off with a walk, Seth Smith (OF, So., Mississippi) singled and both advanced on Mike Nickeas' (C, So., Georgia Tech) sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Lillibridge. Lillibridge drove the 1-0 pitch from Mexico starter Arturo Lazano over the left field wall to put Team USA ahead by three runs. Eric Patterson (IF, So., Georgia Tech) continued the hit parade with a triple to right field extending his hitting streak to eight games and scored on a RBI ground out by Dustin Pedroia (IF, So., Arizona State) for a 4-0 Team USA lead.

The Red, White & Blue went up by eight runs in the fourth inning on Larish's grand slam, his second homer of the summer and second grand slam for Team USA. Mexico came back with two runs in the seventh inning as Erick Gradea knocked a two-out RBI double to score Jorge Rodriguez and Alonso Valenzuela advanced home on a passed by from Nickeas.

Team USA finished the night with 11 hits, including two from Lillibridge and three by Tyler Greene (IF, Fr., Georgia Tech). The 11 hits for Team USA tied the squad's second highest total of the summer.
