Baseball's Van Houten Named Valley League Player of the Week

HARRISONBURG, Va. (7/21/03) - Harrisonburg's Jeff Van Houten (Arizona) and Staunton's Erick San Pedro (Miami) have been named Valley League Co-Players of the Week. The awards are based on games played July 14-20.
Van Houten hit .545 (12-for-22) in six games this week and earned Player of the Week honors for the second straight week.
The Turks' outfielder went 4-for-4 with a double, two triples, three runs scored and four RBI in a 10-0 win over Covington Friday. Van Houten had three triples and four doubles on the week for a 1.00 slugging percentage.
In the Turks' 7-1 win over Front Royal Tuesday, Van Houten went 3-for-5, with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Van Houten had two hits in the Turks' 6-5 loss at Staunton Wednesday for his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
On the week, Van Houten scored nine runs, drove in eight and walked three times for an on-base percentage of .600. Van Houten leads the Valley Leage in batting average (.448), slugging percentage (.781), on base percentage (.504) and doubles (15), and is tied for the league-lead in triples (4) and RBI (32).
Van Houten earned the previous week's award after going 10-for-18 (.556), including a 9-for-9 streak, in leading the Turks to a 5-0 record for the week and back into first place.
After going 0-for-4 in the Turks' 4-3 13-inning win over New Market Monday, Van Houten reeled off a 5-for-5 performance at Front Royal Tuesday, a 3-for-3 performance at Luray Thursday and singled in his first at bat Friday against Luray before a strikeout ended a perfect 9-for-9 run.
Van Houten scored a run and drove in three in the Turks' 9-2 win at Front Royal, and followed with a home run and three more RBI in the Turks' 11-4 win at Luray. Van Houten went 2-for-4 and scored a run in the Turks' come-from-behind 6-5 win over Luray Friday.
Van Houten scored a run and added an RBI Saturday as the Turks defeated Staunton 5-3 and increased their lead in the Southern Division to 2 1/2 games. The Turks trailed Staunton by a half-game heading into the week.
On the week, Van Houten had two doubles, a home run, seven RBI, an on-base percentage of .640 and a .833 slugging percentage.
