STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University sophomore-to-be Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) picked up her first career WTA Tour singles win on Tuesday at the 2003 Bank of the West Classic at the Taube Tennis Center.

Liu, who is ranked 332nd in the world and entered the tournament as a wild card, defeated 159th-ranked Tara Snyder of the United States 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Snyder has been on tour since 1995, and has been ranked as high as 33rd in the world.

'I was nervous at first, but I was able to settle down and get focused,' Liu said. 'I was able to get my first serves in and hit the ball deeper on the court.'

In the second round, Liu will face the second-ranked player in the world --- Kim Clijsters of Belgium. The time and date of the match has yet to be announced.

'I'll definitely be nervous, but I'm at my homecourts and have a lot of support here,' Liu said. 'I'm sure I'll be nervous the first couple of games, but I'll just have to try to settle down and play my game.'
