July 23, 2003
OTTAWA, Canada - University of California former star hammer thrower Jennifer Joyce was announced as one of nine female Canadian squad members for the Pan American Games by Athletics Canada today. Joyce will compete in the hammer throw at the games that take place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Aug. 5-9.
Joyce earned a spot on the squad after winning the hammer throw (207-11) at the Canada Dry National Track and Field Championships last Friday in Victoria, British Columbia.
'For some of our team members, the Pan Ams will be an opportunity to reach the international medal podium and fine tune their preparation before the World Championships in Paris at the end of August,' says Les Gramantik, head coach of the 2003 Pan American Games Canadian track and field team. 'For others, it will be a chance to gain some valuable international experience in a multi-games setting. There will also be other athletes attempting to make standards for the world championships before the end of the qualification period on August 10th.'
Joyce, a two-time All-American, owns the Cal school hammer record (214-0). During her career as a Golden Bear she won one Pac-10 hammer championship title and was an NCAA qualifier in the event all four years. Her highest finish at the NCAA Track and Field Championships came as a sophomore when she took fourth-place.
