Thompson Third In 100 Free Semifinals, Rose Helps USA Relay Team To Gold

Barcelona, Spain - Former Stanford swimmer Jenny Thompson (1991-95) qualified third in the semifinals Thursday of the 100 meter free with a time of 54.81 at the 10th FINA World Championships swam at the Palau Saint Jordi Venue. Thompson, who was second during the heats with a time of 54.83, is scheduled to compete in the finals of the event on Friday.
Former Stanford swimmer Gabrielle Rose (1996-2000) also pitched in on the USA's gold-medal 4x200 meter free relay team. Rose swam the third leg of the semifinals, clocking in at 2:01.98 with the team finishing at 8:02.64 to qualify first for the finals on Thursday evening. The USA won the gold medal without Rose in the lineup by swimming a time of 7:55.70 in the finals.
The FINA World Championships continue through Sunday, July 27. Current Stanford swimmer Tara Kirk (senior in 2003-04) is also competing in the event.
