STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- Jeff Larish (IF, So., Arizona State) homered for the fourth consecutive game and Seth Smith (OF, So., Mississippi) added his third homer of the summer as the USA Baseball National Team defeated Northern Ohio 4-3 in a five-inning game cut short due to heavy rain. The win improves Team USA to 21-0 on the summer and completes a four-game sweep for the Red, White & Blue vs. Northern Ohio.

Larish, who leads Team USA in home runs this summer with seven, hit five home runs in the series vs. Northern Ohio. Danny Putnam (OF, So., Stanford) and Eric Patterson (IF, So., Georgia Tech) each went 2-for-3 to also lead Team USA at the plate. Stephen Head worked all five innings to earn the victory for Team USA and lifting his summer record to 3-0. Head allowed three hits on three runs and struck out three batters.

Northern Ohio opened up a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A lead off walk to Tommy Caple and a wild pitch by Head put a runner on second base with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt, P.J. Pilittere knocked a RBI ground out to shortstop scoring Caple. The lead for Northern Ohio marked only the third time this summer Team USA has trailed. Team USA has never trailed by more than one run this summer.

The lead for Northern Ohio would be short though, as the Red, White & Blue came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a one-run lead. A two-out single by Putnam set the stage for Larish, who drilled a 1-2 pitch from Northern Ohio starter Rudy Quinonez (USC) over the right centerfield wall for a two-run homer.

The USA would increase the lead to 4-1 in the second inning. Smith led off the frame with a home run, belting Quinonez first pitch over the right center wall for his second home run of the series. Patterson also delivered a two-out RBI single to score Head as Team USA built a three-run lead.

Northern Ohio crept to within one run with a pair of homers in the fourth and fifths innings. Danny Dorn knocked a home run to right center in the fourth and Arizona State sophomore-to-be Nick Cadena delivered a one-out solo shot to left field for Northern Ohio.

Following completion of the fifth inning, heavy rains came pouring down to halt the game at 5:32 p.m. Team officials and the umpiring crew called the rest of the game as the rain continued to come down.

ASU sophomore shortstop Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-3 in the game and is now hitting .304 (24-for-79). Larish inched over the .300 mark for the summer at .303 (23-for-76) and in addition to leading Team USA with seven home runs, he also tops the squad with 20 RBI.

Team USA will face the Great Lakes Collegiate League All-Stars on Monday evening at Mills Field with first pitch set for 6 p.m. Jered Weaver (2-0, RHP, So., Long Beach State) is the scheduled starter for Team USA. Monday night's game will be Team USA's final game before heading to the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The USA opens up at the Pan Am Games on August 2 at 7:30 p.m. vs. Guatemala in the first of four pool games. Also in the United States pool are the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
