Four Former Bruins To Play In MLS All-Star Game Saturday

July 29, 2003

Four former UCLA soccer players have been selected to the 18-man Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star team. The MLS All-Stars will face legendary Mexican club CD Guadalajara in the 2003 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game on Saturday, Aug. 2 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The League's mid-summer showcase event will be televised nationally, live on ABC Sports beginning at 12:30 p.m. (PT).

Sixteen of the players were elected through voting by fans, media, players coaches and general managers, while two others were selected as special Commissioner's Picks by MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Chicago defender Carlos Bocanegra (UCLA 1997-99) was the leading vote-getter among players and was tied with former New York/New Jersey MetroStar goalkeeper Tim Howard among coaches and GM ballots. Taylor Twellman and Chicago forward Ante Razov (UCLA 1992-95) led the way among the soccer media, while Landon Donovan was the favorite in the fan balloting.

Also named to the team were goalkeeper Kevin Hartman (UCLA 1995-96) and defender Frankie Hejduk (UCLA 1992-94). Each Bruin player is making his second career All-Star appearance.

In addition, a group of 16 players, including Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Cobi Jones (UCLA 1988-91), were selected as All-Stars by MLS. These players will not travel for the match but will be available for selection by MLS All-Star Head Coach Bob Bradley and his MetroStars coaching staff in the case replacements are needed for the designated 18-man roster.

Jones has now been selected as an All-Star in each of the league's eight years of existence.
