Mayorkas Advances at U.S. Women's Amateur

UCLA All-American Charlotte Mayorkas won her first round match Thursday at the 103rd U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, hosted by the USGA at the Philadelphia Country Club.

Mayorkas recorded a 5&4 victory over Shayna Miyajima of Wailuku, HI. The UCLA junior began the day with five consecutive pars while her opponent struggled with a bogey and two double bogeys on the first five holes. After a bogey at the par 5 sixth hole cut Mayorkas's lead to 2-up, two bogeys and a pair of pars gave her a 6-up advantage after 10 holes. Miyajima cut the lead to 5-up with a par at 11, and a bogey at 13 reduced it to 4-up. Mayorkas clinched the victory with a par at the 417-yard 14th hole.

Sixty-four players will compete in 32 first round matches Thursday. The second round begins Thursday after the first round matches are completed.
