OSU Departs For Costa Rican Tour
Aug. 11, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
The Oregon State women's soccer team departs for its 12-day tour of Costa Rica Tuesday morning, and will play five matches against professional and national teams on the trip.
The Beavers face Costa Rican National Teams in their final two matches, and square off with the Costa Rican First Division champion as well.
Among the sights the squad will see are the Arenal Volcano and Tabacon Hot Springs, as well as a jungle river tour.
OSU has several training sessions scheduled, and will practice and play in San Jose and San Carlos.
'I think this trip is very important,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'In this instance, we felt that with a young squad, it would be great to have these games under our belt. We have a very tough regular season schedule this year with 10 opponents that were in the tournament last year, so playing some challenging preseason matches should be a great benefit.
'This trip will also give our older players a chance to really build on some things, and it should help in our preparations for the season.'
The Beavers return six starters from last year's 9-9-2 squad, as well as 12 letterwinners.
OSU returns from Costa Rica Aug. 24, five days before its opener at San Diego State on Aug. 29.
OSU's schedule of matches in Costa Rica follows:
Aug. 14: Game 1 vs. Heredia
Aug. 15: Game 2 vs. First Division Champions
Aug. 17: Game 3 vs. San Carlos
Aug. 21: Game 4 vs. Costa Rica National Team
Aug. 23: Game 5 vs. Costa Rica National Team #2
