Aug. 11, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The USA TODAY/American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Preseason Poll, released Monday, shows the Washington State University volleyball team ranked 19th.
The defending national and Pacific-10 Conference champion, Southern California, was the overwhelming preseason favorite with 64 of the 65 ballots selecting the Women of Troy first, followed by Hawai'i.
Four more Pac-10 schools were listed among the top 25 including Stanford fourth, Arizona 10th, UCLA 13th, and California 24th. In addition to the Pac-10 schools listed on the preseason poll, Washington State will also meet No. 21 Missouri at the Utah Hampton Inn Classic Tournament, Sept. 6, at Salt Lake City.
The Washington State volleyball team finished the 2002 season with a 24-8 record and ranked seventh nationally. The Cougars graduated five starters off the 2002 squad and were selected to finish eighth in the Pac-10 Conference 2003 standings by a vote of the coaches.
The WSU volleyball team is currently in the first full week of two-a-day practice sessions. Head coach Cindy Fredrick, beginning her 15th year with the program, will showcase the Cougars in an inter-squad scrimmage on an outdoor court at the Cougar Plaza parking lot, Friday, Aug. 22, at 5:30 p.m., as part of the Pullman Lentil Festival. The WSU team opens the season with the 15th Annual Cougar Challenge Tournament, Aug. 29-30, at Bohler Gym.
