2002 Pacific-10 Men's Soccer Season In Review

The Pacific-10 Conference enjoyed a successful campaign in 2002, as four teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. OREGON STATE made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. CALIFORNIA made its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. STANFORD and UCLA advanced all the way to the College Cup, eventually meeting in the National Championship game, where UCLA slipped past the Cardinal to claim its fourth NCAA men's soccer title.

UCLA nabbed its first Pac-10 title with a 16-3 (8-2, Pac-10) record and made its 20th straight postseason appearance, and its 18th trip to the College Cup, soccer's version of the Final Four. The No. 3-seed Bruins upeneded the second-seed Maryland Terrapins and defeated STANFORD, 1-0, to win the Cup.

California's Josh Saunders earned Pac-10 Player of the Year honors, while Co-Coach of the Year honors were awarded to California's Kevin Grimes and Oregon State's Dana Taylor. The season will be remembered as a sad one though, as 2002 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Joe Zaher from Oregon State died tragically on December 1, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
