TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona Football Training Camp Notes...

... The University of Arizona football team returned to the UA practice facility Tuesday afternoon for its single practice of the day. The Wildcats worked out in full pads for two hours and closed the session with situational work in the scoring zone. 'We had a very good workout today. We need a couple of days like this where we start practice at 4:30 p.m. because that is pretty close to our normal practice time during the season. It was extra hot today, but the team worked very hard today,' said head coach John Mackovic...

... Quarterbacks Nic Costa, Ryan O'Hara, Kris Heavner and Richard Kovalcheck combined to complete 9-of-16 passes in controlled skeleton-style drills against UA's pass coverage personnel. Redshirt freshman Ryan O'Hara hit 4-of-6 passes for 65 yards, sophomore Nic Costa completed 3-of-5 passes for 15 yards, and true freshman Kris Heavner converted on both pass attempts for 15 yards. True freshman Richard Kovalcheck was 0-for-3 during passing drills... 'We had a few instances where the quarterbacks were flushed, and they had to scramble, but they were still able to pick up the receivers and make some throws,' Mackovic said...

... In the skeleton-style passing drills against the linebackers and defensive backs, O'Hara connected with senior wideout Lance Relford on two 15-yard passes, while Costa threw a couple of short passes to sophomore halfback Mike Bell and sophomore fullback Sean Jones. Relford led all receivers with three catches, and freshman Syndric Steptoe came up with two receptions...

... In the full-team session that caps each practice, the focus turned to work in the scoring zone. Costa completed 3-of-5 passes for 40 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Biren Ealy. Costa also hit sophomore fullback Pedro Limon for a 10-yard TD pass. O'Hara completed 2-of-4 passes for 15 yards and threw a 10-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Ricky Williams. Sophomore halfback Mike Bell rushed three times for 25 yards, and senior halfback Clarence Farmer rushed twice for five yards...

... On the defensive side, junior cornerback Luis Nunez broke up a pass in the full-team session. Mackovic also told reporters following today's session that he was pleased with the pass defense in the scoring-zone session. 'One thing I noticed during the scoring zone period was that the pass defense did a good job of adjusting to the different passing routes,' he said...

... Redshirt freshman offensive guard and sophomore offensive tackle Tanner Bell missed workouts Tuesday with knee injuries. 'With Tanner Bell, we have good news. He will be able to start rehab when the swelling in his knee goes down, and we expect him to be back within a month,' Mackovic said...

... True freshman defensive tackle Cedric Cofer missed workouts Tuesday. 'Cedric had a stress fracture from before, and it did not heal completely before he got here, so we are trying to stabilize it right now,' Mackovic added...

... Mackovic announced that sophomore Brad Brittain is no longer on the team. Brittain, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound defensive end from San Diego, Calif., played in nine games as a backup on the defensive line in 2002...

... Arizona's two-a-day sessions are limited to five days throughout training camp, which ends on Friday, August 22. The Wildcats will hold two-a-day sessions on Wednesday, August 13, with practices at 6:20 a.m. and 7:05 p.m., at the Rincon Vista complex. The team will have double practice sessions on Friday before participating in Fan Appreciation Night festivities and a scrimmage on Saturday, August 16, at Arizona Stadium.
