Football Training Camp Notes - Day 8

Aug. 13, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona Football Training Camp Notes...

... The University of Arizona football team attempted to practice Wednesday evening at the Rincon Vista facility, but the second session of the day ultimately was canceled due to rain. The team will reverse its schedule for Thursday and Friday. The Wildcats will hold two practices on Thursday, August 14, at 7:05 a.m. and 7:05 p.m., with both sessions to be held at the Rincon Vista complex, and they will practice at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 15, in the UA practice facility...

... UA practiced in the Rincon Vista complex Wednesday morning, as the Wildcats worked out in helmets and shoulder pads for two hours. The Wildcats started to put more situation work in the morning workout, with plenty of third-down plays. The team will put in more goal-line work, including some red-zone scrimmaging, as training camp reaches the mid-way point...

... In the morning skeleton drills, sophomore quarterback Nic Costa had the best effort - 3-for-5, 60 yards and two touchdown tosses to junior wide receiver Ricky Williams (25 and 15 yards). Redshirt freshman Ryan O'Hara completed 2-of-5 passes for 20 yards, true freshman Kris Heavner went 0-for-3, and true freshman Richard Kovalcheck completed 1-of-2 passes for 10 yards...

... On the other side of the ball, the defensive backs knocked down five of the 16 throws, including another by backup cornerback Luis Nunez, the squad camp leader in secondary 'points'...

... Williams is benefiting from more work with top receiver Andrae Thurman (61 catches, 915 yards last year) sidelined while awaiting a summer academic report. 'Whew, did he make some nice catches! He has good strength, catches the ball, can go inside in traffic and presents himself well,' head coach John Mackovic said after the morning practice...

... The 'team' drill was not as successful for the offense, as O'Hara finished with 2-of-6 completions for 15 yards, Costa went 0-for-2, and the freshman quarterbacks and others got more work. Heavner proved the most efficient, with 4-of-5 completions for 50 yards, but he was working against the No. 3 defenders most of the time. Freshman safety Marcus Hollingsworth intercepted a throw by Costa and appears to be a contender for playing time, according to Mackovic. 'He's a hitter,' he said...

... Arizona's two-a-day sessions are limited to five days throughout training camp, which ends on Friday, August 22. The Wildcats are set to participate in Fan Appreciation Night festivities and a scrimmage on Saturday, August 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Arizona Stadium.
