Kegel On Point In First Scrimmage
Aug. 13, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State senior quarterback Matt Kegel connected on all 14 of his pass attempts for 133 yards and two touchdowns in the Cougars' first scrimmage of the 2003 fall camp Wednesday evening.
Kegel, who worked against the second unit defense for much of the night, threw touchdowns passes of 11 yards to sophomore tight end Troy Bienemann and seven yards to senior receiver Sammy Moore.
'I was a little disappointed in our first couple of drives,' Kegel said. 'Once we all got on the same page and started clicking, we did a nice job moving the ball down the field and got a couple of scores.'
Senior Jermaine Green and junior transfer Chris Bruhn were the focal point of WSU's running attack. Green rushed for 36 yards on five carries, including a 26-yard burst that saw him break three tackles. Bruhn racked up 40 yards on six carries and showed why he is expected to be an immediate contributor for the Cougars in his first season out of Butte College.
Senior Sammy Moore, junior Tramaine Murray, and sophomore Marty Martin were the most frequent targets for the quarterbacks through the air during the nearly two-hour session. Moore hauled in five passes for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Murray got 50 of his 53 yards on a toss from freshman signal caller Alex Brink. Martin has been a consistent option with WSU's new emphasis on the short passing game and demonstrated that again Wednesday night, catching four passes for 51 yards.
First-unit defenders D.D. Acholonu, Don Jackson, and Erik Coleman all came away with sacks. Freshman Reyshawn Bobo led the scrimmage with two sacks, while reserves Matt Mullenix and Odell Howard also 'tagged' quarterbacks behind the line.
Redshirt freshman Eric Frampton recorded the evening's only interception, picking off a pass from Chris Hurd and returning it 17 yards.
The Cougars open the 2003 campaign Aug. 30 at Seattle's Seahawk Stadium against Palouse rival Idaho.
