OREGON DUCKS

TEAM PREVIEW
Plain and simple - the Ducks will be young, young, and young. Eight freshmen, three sophomores and two juniors make up the 2003 Oregon roster for coach Carl Ferreira. Fortunately, experienced sophomore setter Jodi Bell returns to guide the Oregon attack.

STRENGTHS

  • Bell tallied 844 assists (8.19 apg) during her rookie season in which she shared setting duties with Sydney Chute. Chute completed her eligibility, so the reins will be solely in the hands of Bell.
  • Junior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf (1.90 kpg/0.44 bpg) and sophomore middle blocker Kelly Russell (2.70 kpg/0.61 bpg) will give the Ducks experienced options on offense.
  • Junior Katie O'Neil will provide leadership as the team's libero. She posted 215 digs (2.22 dpg) last season.

    CONCERNS

  • The Conference schedule could be a mental challenge for the young squad as it will play 16 of its 18 league matches against squads that appeared in last year's postseason.
  • Experience in the middle as the Ducks will need to replace All-Pac-10 honorable mention middle blocker Lindsay Closs. The Ducks ranked ninth in the league in blocks last season at 1.94 blocks per game. Returning players accounted for just 0.81 blocks per game.
  • The Ducks will need to improve on hitting efficiency. The team ranked last in hitting percentage at .189, while returning players combined for a .159 attack percentage.
  • With only five returning letterwinners, the eight incoming freshmen will need to make an immediate impact.

    ACCORDING TO COACH FERREIRA
'To succeed we have to have great kids with enjoyable chemistry. We have to have a family atmosphere in which we grow and learn from our mistakes.

'I like the fact that we are a young team. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Our roster is primarily built on players from the state of Oregon so they are true duck fans. They are so passionate about being successful in this league.

'With our roster and the kids we have playing for us, people should see a clear, definable formula for the type of kids we want and our recruiting philosophy. These players have the intangibles of being winners. The players coming in are competitors that make the people around them better.'
