Men's Soccer Team Ranked No. 1 In Pre-Season Polls

Aug. 19, 2003

The UCLA men's soccer team has been ranked No. 1 in both the NSCAA/adidas Pre-Season National Rankings and the Pac-10 Pre-Season Coaches' Poll.

The defending NCAA champion Bruins will face eight other NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams, including No. 2 Maryland on the road on Sept. 5 at Maryland, and No. 3 Stanford on Oct. 19 and 24. The Bruins also meet up with ranked No. 14 Virginia, No. 16 Penn State in the season opener Aug. 29, No. 17 California, and three teams tied for No. 22 - Loyola Marymount, New Mexico and Portland.

The pre-season Pac-10 Coaches' Poll has a similar look, as the Bruins are picked to repeat as Conference champions. UCLA, which won its first Pac-10 crown last year with an 8-2 conference record, received four of six first-place votes and 24 points overall. No. 2 Stanford received the other two first-place votes and 22 points overall. The two teams finished No. 1 and 2 in the country last season, facing each other in the NCAA College Cup final, which UCLA won, 1-0.
