Football Training Camp Notes - Day 15

Aug. 21, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona Football Training Camp Report...

... After 15 days of training camp, the University of Arizona football team has completed 19 practice sessions, with one more practice remaining on the schedule before game-week preparations begin for the season opener against UTEP on Saturday, Aug. 30, in Arizona Stadium. The Wildcats will hold their final training camp session on Friday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m., in the UA practice facility on campus...

... Following Thursday's session, head coach John Mackovic said that the team was somewhat limited in terms of having the right amount of healthy personnel necessary for running a full scrimmage. 'We really didn't have enough players to go for a full scrimmage. So, we simulated a number of reps, and we ran the equivalent to what we would get in a game. The purpose of training camp is to get game ready, and we were still able to do that,' he said...

... Several regulars were held out of Thursday's action with the expectation that they will be back to practice in time for the UTEP game. 'We have about 20 players who have nicks, bumps and bruises. The good thing is that we didn't lose anybody tonight. I expect everyone to be ready who can be ready to go next week,' Mackovic said...

... In the limited 11-on-11 team drills, quarterbacks Nic Costa and Ryan O'Hara each led the offense in a 10-play session. O'Hara completed 3-of-5 passes for 33 yards and had one interception, while Costa completed 1-of-5 passes for 10 yards and had two interceptions. Costa also had two rushing touchdowns for first downs in the final team session and ended up with 17 yards on two rushes. O'Hara hit sophomore Biren Ealy for a 22-yard completion, and Costa's only completion during the team period was a 5-yard toss to senior running back Clarence Farmer. 'We had a really good workout tonight, and we had a lot of good work tonight in our 7-on-7 drills and team drills,' Mackovic said...

... On the defensive side, junior cornerback Zeonte Sherman intercepted O'Hara at the goal line, while sophomore safety Lamon Means and true freshman safety Marcus Hollingsworth intercepted Costa in the final team session of the evening. Mackovic credited Hollingsworth with the team's play of the day. 'The offense was driving, and he came up with a big play. I liked ending on that play. It was a great example of how the defense hangs on and has someone come through with a big play,' Mackovic said...

... When asked by reporters about the starting lineup for the team's season opener, Mackovic explained that he expects several players at some of the key positions to earn playing time and have an opportunity to contribute significantly on the field. 'Whatever lineup we distribute at some point, it is always subject to substitutions. I still feel that we will rotate quarterbacks at the beginning, and we have a number of running backs and wide receivers that can play. We also have a number of secondary guys who can play, so I would be very surprised if a lot of players don't get a chance to play,' Mackovic said...

... Senior running back Clarence Farmer, who returned Wednesday after a two-day absence because of a sore left knee, had four carries for eight yards during the team session. 'Clarence really ran hard tonight, and he is feeling good. With Clarence, Mike Bell and Chris Henry, we have three good runners in the backfield,' Mackovic said...

... Following practice, Mackovic also offered praise for sophomore fullback Pedro Limon, a native of Douglas, Ariz. 'Pedro is a really good story. He came in at another position, but he has settled in at fullback. He is coming on, and he is going to be a good contributor,' Mackovic said.

... After the final training camp session on Friday, the Wildcats will have the weekend off. They will return to the practice field on Monday, Aug. 25. Practices will be closed to the public during the season.
