Black Squad Defeats White Squad In Volleyball Scrimmage
Aug. 22, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team held its final intrasquad scrimmage of the fall Friday. The Black squad won all four games the Beavers played.
The majority of the 14 players stayed on the same team all afternoon, although a few players saw action for both the White and Black squads as coach Nancy Somera looked to firm up her lineup for next week's season opener against Gonzaga.
Outside hitter Karah Rhoades and middle blocker Brittany Cahoon started for the Black squad, but both also saw action for the White squad as Katelyn Healy had a chance to play both positions for the Black squad after starting for the White squad.
'We've got some depth this year. We're doing a lot of things well, but we need to keep getting better,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'I like that we have things to work on, because it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you improve in certain areas.
'We're serving a lot tougher, and our defense is looking good. Still, we've got some things to work before that first game,' she said. 'We need to steady out our offensive rhythm, although it's good for this time of year. We also need to clean up our blocking a little more.'
The Beavers host the annual OSU Volleyball Showcase on Friday and Saturday, August 29-30. OSU opens with Gonzaga at 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Beavers play Mississippi State at 10 a.m. and Northern Arizona at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free for all matches.
