No. 16 Cal Downs San Jose State, 9-1, in Exhibition Play
Aug. 22, 2003
BERKELEY - Seven different players scored for No. 16 California as the Golden Bears routed San Jose State, 9-1, in an exhibition Friday at Edwards Stadium. Senior midfielder Kassie Doubrava and freshman forward Bri Wiles led the way with two goals each.
'This is the end of both of our pre-seasons,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'Both teams are in various degrees of injury and fatigue. We're quite deep, and San Jose State is contending with many injuries. As the game went on, we out ran them. I thought quite a few players played well. Our backline played very well. Our starting group showed why we started them today. Some of the players who came off the bench needed some playing time to get their feet wet, while others did very well.'
Senior defender Lucy Brining tallied the Bears' first goal in the 16th minute on a header off a corner kick from senior midfielder Kimberly Yokers. Doubrava's first score in the 24th minute gave Cal a 2-0 halftime lead. Senior defender Amy Willison recorded the first of her two assists on the Bears' second goal of the half.
Cal stepped up its attack another level after the break, scoring five of its seven second-half goals during a nine-minute stretch. Five of the goals were 1-v-1 opportunities with the goalkeeper. Sophomore forward Liz Eisenberg converted the first goal of the second half by showcasing her dribbling talents. She then assisted on her team's next goal, which came from a 15-yard strike by senior midfielder Ashley Valenzuela.
After Doubrava tallied her second goal of the day, sophomore forwards Tracy Hamm and Dania Cabello, who were first (18) and third (17), respectively, on the team in points in 2002, dented the scoring column. Wiles put an exclamation point on a strong Cal outing with goals in the 60th and 79th minutes.
Andrea Puljiz notched San Jose State's only goal on a free kick from 20-yards out.
Cal opens the regular season next week as host of the ninth-annual Cal Invitational Friday and Sunday, Aug. 29 and 31. Action begins on Friday at 2 p.m. with Saint Mary's facing Montana, followed by Cal against Wisconsin at 4:30 p.m.
