Bruin Scrimmage at Cal State Fullerton
Aug. 23, 2003
The UCLA football team held its first full scrimmage this afternoon at Cal State Fullerton. The scrimmage, viewed by several thousand fans, concluded the Bruins' nine-day, eight-night stay in Orange County.
Both candidates for the starting quarterback job, Matt Moore and Drew Olson, looked sharp while playing for both the first and second offenses. Moore, who opened the scrimmage, completed eight of 11 passes for 118 yards and one interception while Olson completed six of nine passes for 144 yards.
Tailback Tyler Ebell did not participate in the scrimmage but several other backs had a chance to run the ball. Freshman Maurice Drew gained 45 tough yards on 11 carries and had a seven-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty. Manuel White had 32 yards on three carries, including one run on which he carried a defender for at least 10 yards, and scored a one-yard touchdown. Akil Harris added 38 yards on 14 attempts.
The defense, especially the first unit, looked improved and more physical. The senior-dominated line of tackles Rodney Leisle and Ryan Boschetti and ends Dave and Mat Ball put continuous heat on the quarterbacks, who were not live (not able to be hit).
Redshirt freshman place kicker Jason Medlock made all three of his field goal attempts (35, 30 and 21 yards) and junior punter Chris Kluwe averaged 44.7 yards on four punts.
The Bruins return to Spaulding Field for practice on Sunday (4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.). Practices through Wednesday are open to all fans. Beginning on Thursday, August 28, practices will be closed.
