Mayor of Seattle Proclaims Purple Fridays
Aug. 27, 2003
Seattle - Seattle mayor Greg Nickels announced a proclamation today that every Friday between Aug. 29 and Nov. 21 will be 'Purple Fridays' in the hometown of the Washington Huskies. In the proclamation Nickels encourages citizens to wear purple on Fridays to show support for the Huskies.
Timed with the announcement of the proclamation was Washington's kickoff of its TGIP (Thank Goodness It's Purple) campaign, also encouraging Husky fans to wear purple on Fridays and to all Washington athletic events.
'Our entire athletic staff wears purple on Fridays and we want to see that spread into the community,' says Husky athletic director Barbara Hedges. 'Seattle is Husky territory and we want all the great supports of the Washington program to literally wear that passion on Friday's during the year. It is a marvelous site to see all of the purple at Husky Stadium for a home football game. We want to expand that and we appreciate Mayor Nickels helping us to announce this campaign.'
An element of the University's TGIP campaign will focus on assisting area retailers in their sales of officially licensed Husky merchandise.
To support the campaign, the TGIP slogan is featured on Washington's schedule posters and schedule cards and other various promotional items throughout the academic year.
