Aug. 29, 2003

UCLA great Amy Acuff on Friday at the 2003 World Track & Field Championships in Paris advanced in women's high jump qualifying and will compete in Sunday's final.

On Friday, Acuff cleared 6-4 to advance. 'I'm really proud of myself for pulling through with the rain and everything,' Acuff said. 'The nice thing is that it was pretty warm out there. That was nice. We could go under the overhang of the stadium and stay dry. I'm just really happy to automatically qualify and get out of there in one heat.

'I hope for the final (on Sunday) the weather is nice,' said Acuff. 'We're going to see some big marks in the final by probably a lot of people. I hope the weather holds out so we can put on a big show. I'm in the best shape of my life. I plan to be there in the medal round.'Acuff, who competed at UCLA from 1994-97, several weeks ago high jumped apersonal-best 6-7, the top U. S. mark this season and No. 5 in the World. Thetwo-time Olympian won her fourth USA title in June, jumping 6-4.75. Acuff'sperformances this season have put her in a position to win an internationalchampionships medal for the first time since winning the gold medal at the 1997World University Games.
