BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore forward Liz Eisenberg celebrated her 19th birthday by posting the game-winning goal in No. 16 California's 2-1 victory over Wisconsin on day one of the ninth-annual California Invitational.
The season opener for both teams began 0-0 at the half, but Wisconsin dented the scoreboard first with a goal by reserve Allison Preiss in the 49th minute. Katy Lindenmuth sent a cross from the right side, and Preiss scored from about 10 yards.
Sophomore forward Tracy Hamm, the Golden Bears' top returning scorer with 18 points a year ago, evened the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute on a broken play. Freshman forward Katie Ratican sent an errant pass to her left. The ball found Hamm, who looped the ball inside the far right post just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Stefani Szczechowski.
'Tracy scores crazy, random goals,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'She's not afraid to shoot. She'll shoot at odd times when nobody expects it. She hit a blooper that went over the goalkeeper and totally surprised her.'
Eisenberg, who re-entered the game in the 75th minute, notched her first career Cal goal in the 86th minute. Senior defender Amy Willison corralled a loose ball deep in the Badgers' penalty area and played a short pass out to the left, where Eisenberg took a low shot that rolled into the net.
'We saw our frontline getting tired so we got Bri (Wiles), Alivia (Mazura) and Gidget (Eisenberg) ready,' said Boyd. 'We wanted to go with some fresh legs. Gidget did a good job tucking her shot away. Wisconsin is a good team.'
'I played with Tracy and Dania (Cabello) all summer,' said Eisenberg. 'We work well together. I finally feel like I'm healthy, and I'm fit. I knew that it was my time to step up.'
Cal sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio set an Edwards Stadium record with seven saves. Three saves came in the first 10 minutes of the game on quality chances by the Badgers.
Saint Mary's (1-0) defeated Montana, 1-0, in the first game of the California Invitational. Jen Belzer scored for the Gaels in the 48th minute off of a corner kick from Lucianne Crenshaw. The Gaels outshot the Grizzlies (0-1), 21-5.
The tournament continues Sunday with Saint Mary's facing Wisconsin at 2 p.m., followed by Cal vs. Montana at 4:30 p.m.
