Volleyball Defeats Gonzaga, 3-2, In Season Opener

Aug. 29, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team opened the 2003 season with a 3-2 win over Gonzaga in the first match of the annual OSU Volleyball Showcase at Gill Coliseum on Friday. The Beavers beat the Bulldogs, 30-23, 30-16, 28-30, 28-30, 15-5.

OSU's offense got off to a strong start, hitting .306 to Gonzaga's .143 in the first game. The Beavers hit just .100 in the second game, but the Bulldogs had nine errors and only three kills in that game to allow the Beavers to put some points on the board despite their own hitting errors.

However, Gonzaga's offense took a turn for the better after the break, with the Zags hitting .400 and .308 to win the next two games.

OSU coach Nancy Somera made some substitutions in the fourth game, and the result carried over in game five. Setter Desma Stovall came in midway through the fourth game, and she played the entire fifth game to run an offense that hit .533 in the deciding game.

'It was a great team effort to pull that thing out in the fifth game. A lot of people did a good job coming off the bench for us,' said Somera, who picked up her 50th career win with the victory on Friday. 'I thought Desma did a phenomenal job sparking us and getting things going in the second half of the fourth game and keeping it rolling in game five. She was a big help.'

Stovall finished with a career-high 14 assists and hit .571 with a career-high five kills, and she added four digs, two blocks and two ace.

Anne Watts-Roberts made the most of her first match as a Beaver, as the Montana State transfer led the Beavers with a match-high 21 kills on .357 hitting.

'That was a nice OSU debut for Anne. Twenty-one kills and .357 hitting - her offense really helped us there,' Somera said.

Amanda Eggert hit .455 with a career-high 13 kills, and Allison Lawrence chipped in 13 kills as well.

Lawrence led the defense with 15 digs to finish with a double-double, and K.C. Frederic (12) and Karah Rhoades (10) also picked up double-figures in the dig column.

OSU's servers tallied 15 aces, including four from Lawrence. Seven of the eight players who served had at least one ace for the Beavers.

Still, the Beavers had 18 service errors and 31 hitting errors, finishing the night with a .241 percentage as a team.

'Clearly there were too many errors on our side of the net. We were aggressive, but we need to tame that aggressiveness and be a tad bit smarter at times,' Somera said. 'We did get better with that at the end of the match. It's nice to be 1-0.'

Christina Davis led Gonzaga with 17 kills and 10 digs.

Northern Arizona beat Mississippi State 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-28) in Friday's second match. MSU's Jami Hester led all players with 14 kills, and Megan Van Anda had 12 kills and 12 digs for NAU.

The Showcase continues Saturday with OSU hosting MSU at 10 a.m., followed by NAU and Gonzaga at noon. MSU and Gonzaga play at 5:30 p.m., and OSU and NAU close out the weekend at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
