Aug. 30, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State used a solid all-around offensive attack to sweep Northern Arizona, 3-0, in the final match of the OSU Volleyball Showcase on Saturday night. The Beavers (3-0) defeated the Lumberjacks, 30-15, 30-25, 30-21, to win the tournament title.
OSU placed four players on the seven-person All-Tournament Team. Anne Watts-Roberts was named the Most Valuable Player, and Allison Lawrence, Karah Rhoades and Laura Collins also earned recognition. NAU's Claire Robertson and Ellie Butterfield and Gonzaga's Christina Davis also were named to the All-Tourney team.
The Beavers hit .387 as a team en route to defeating NAU. Three OSU players finished with double-digit kills, while no NAU player had more than six. Watts-Roberts finished the night with 12 kills and no errors on 17 attempts for a .706 hitting percentage, the fourth-best single-match mark in OSU history. Lawrence led all players with 13 kills, and Amanda Eggert hit .500 with 11 kills. Collins dished out 38 assists and added six kills of her own.
'We had good distribution from our setters tonight,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'We've got some things to get better at, and our opponents showed us that. We played some pretty good volleyball this week, and it was nice to get across the net against an opponent.'
OSU outdug NAU, 41-34, led by Katelyn Healy's career-high 10 digs. NAU's Butterfield led all players with 12. The Beavers also won the serving battle, with 12 aces to NAU's two. Rhoades served five of OSU's aces, and Eggert had three.
'We're serving well, and we're passing well. It makes life easier when you're doing that,' Somera said.
After playing their first three matches on the road, the Beavers hit the road for a string of eight straight away matches beginning at St. Mary's on Wednesday, September 3. After that, OSU heads to Sacramento for a four-match tournament at Sacramento State on Friday and Saturday, September 5-6 before heading to Charlotte, NC the following week.
