Volleyball Upsets No. 17 Wisconsin, 3-0

MADISON, Wis.- The Washington volleyball team (3-0) upset 17th-ranked Wisconsin (2-1), 3-0 (30-26, 30-27, 30-26) this evening to sweep the Badger Invitational. Three Huskies were named to the all-tournament team, including Most Valuable Player Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) and newcomers Brie Hagerty (Defiance, Ohio) and Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.).
Washington continued its impressive hitting performance, out hitting the Badgers .429 to .331. The Huskies finished the tournament with a .470 team hitting percentage. UW also continued to dominate at serve, tallying six service aces against the Badgers to bring its tournament total to 26.
Tomasevic led the Husky attack, recording 18 kills and a pair of aces, while Hagerty caused Wisconsin trouble with 13 kills and a .722 hitting percentage. Also contributing to the Husky strike were Darla Myhre (Victoria, British Columbia) and Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) with eight and seven kills, respectively.
Thompson dished 48 assists on the night, while also picking up a pair of aces and four block assists.
Three Wisconsin players had kills in the double-digits but 18 hitting errors and 10 service errors took the Badgers out of the match. Jill Odenthal led all players with 22 kills.
The Huskies return to action next Friday, Sept. 5, when they open the IPFW tournament in Fort Worth, Indiana against Middle Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m. (CT). Washington will also face Ohio and IPFW on Saturday.
