Freshman Melissa Onstad Makes 12 Saves In 0-0 Battle With San Diego
Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Onstad's 12 saves helped the Oregon State women's soccer squad (1-0-1) preserve a 0-0 double-overtime tie with the University of San Diego (1-0-1) Sunday afternoon in front of 421 fans at USD's Torero Stadium.
Onstad recorded her second shutout in her first two career games; the Beavers topped San Diego State 1-0 Friday night.
'Melissa made some key saves for us today,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'She's playing with a lot of assurance and confidence.'
In all, OSU withstood 24 USD shots while taking 12 of their own, including five on goal.
'We had some quality chances today,' Fennah said. 'We caused some problems for them up front, but the San Diego keeper made some key saves. We had a great team performance; overall, the game today was a credit to women's collegiate soccer.'
The Beavers recorded six shutouts last year, including three in their first four games.
OSU opens its home schedule this weekend, hosting San Francisco in a 5 p.m. match on Friday and Idaho on Sunday at 2 p.m.
