No. 16 Bears Tie Montana 1-1 in Double OT To Win Cal Invitational

Aug. 31, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 16 California tied Montana 1-1 in double overtime to claim the ninth-annual California Invitational Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (1-0-1) won their fifth straight Cal Invite by being the only one of the four teams not to lose one of their two games during the Labor Day weekend tournament.

Cal outshot Montana, 25-5, but was only able to capitalize on one of those opportunities. Sophomore forward Dana Cabello put the Bears ahead 1-0 in the 39th minute with her first goal of the season. Cabello, who posted 17 points last year, dribbled the ball towards goal and slotted her shot inside the left post from about 18 yards.

'Whenever you outshoot a team 25-5 you expect to come out with a win,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'Montana played hard, and they played with a very specific game plan. Once we started figuring (the plan) out, we got our chances. We just couldn't put the game away. I can't tell you how many shots went two inches wide.'

The Grizzlies (0-1-1) tied the game in the 55th minute on a counter attack. Tara Schwager lofted a long shot, and Cal goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio did a good job getting in front of it but wasn't able to secure a clean save. Lindsey Winans pounced on the loose ball and knocked it into the net for her team's first goal of 2003.

'It was a little bit of a sloppy goal, not one we'd expect to normally give up,' said Boyd. 'After that, I thought our defense tightened down pretty well.'

Winans' shot turned out to be the last for Montana on the day, while the Bears launched numerous shots but weren't able to post the go-ahead score. Cabello led Cal with seven shots, including two of her team's six shots in overtime.

Cal travels to No. 1-ranked Santa Clara (1-0-1) Sunday, Sept. 7, for its only game over the next seven days.

In the first game today, Wisconsin (1-1) defeated Saint Mary's (1-1), 3-1. The Badgers led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Katy Lindenmuth and Sarah Capel. Saint Mary's Lu Crenshaw cut Wisconsin's lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 75th minute, but the Badgers countered about a minute later with a goal from Marla Froelich.
