OSU Defeats Saint Mary's In Three Games
Sept. 3, 2003
MORAGA, Calif. - Oregon State's middle blockers combined for 20 kills on .432 hitting to lead the Beaver volleyball team to a 3-0 win (30-27, 30-25, 30-26) over Saint Mary's on Wednesday night.
Amanda Eggert hit .364 with 11 kills, and Katelyn Healy hit a team-best .533 and tied her career-high with nine kills. Healy also had a hand in four of OSU's six blocks and served one of the team's two aces.
The Beavers improved to 4-0 with the victory, while the Gaels were handed their first loss of the season to drop to 3-1.
'We didn't know too much about Saint Mary's, but we did some good things and made some nice adjustments,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'We've got some versatility this year, and we've got some good players on the bench.'
After playing with a 5-1 offense in the first two games, Somera changed it up in game three, going with the 6-2 offense that the Beavers experimented with in the spring. Desma Stovall, who played only in that third game, dished out 14 assists, while Laura Collins finished the match with 32 assists, 12 digs and five kills over three games worth of action.
OSU hit .215 with 55 kills, compared with SMC's 39 kills on .129 hitting. The Beavers had six blocks and two aces, while Saint Mary's had five and a half blocks and five aces.
The Beavers will bus to Sacramento on Thursday to prepare for the Sacramento State Invitational, where they will play two matches on both Friday and Saturday.
