California Men's Golf Heads to Opening Fall Tournament as Defending Champions
Sept. 4, 2003
Berkeley, CA - On Monday Sept., the California men's golf team kicks off its fall season at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate in Southern Pines, NC. In just the third year of the tournament, the Golden Bears return as defending champions.
Vying for the title this year against Cal are Central Florida, Miami (OH), Xavier, Old Dominion, Wichita State, Virginia Commonwealth, San Diego State, Ball State, Wofford, Furman, Davidson, California, Richmond and host UNC Greensboro.
Cal brings its top five golfers to the tournament. The list is headed by senior standout Peter Tomasulo, sophomore and defending Mid Pines Intercollegiate champion Michael Wilson, senior Scott Carlyle and junior Jeff Hood. The last spot has yet to be decided with senior Jesse Ruda, freshmen Brandon Beck and Eliot Wainright all in the running.
Coach Steve Desimone is excited to finally kick off the season.
'Were playing well,' said Desimone. 'Pete is playing magificent golf. We are the defending champs, so we are looking forward to going there and competing.'
Desimone is confident his team will attack the 6,515-yard, par 72 course at Southern Pines, because they have been waiting for this moment all summer.
'We are really looking forward to this year,' said Desimone. 'The team has been building up to this, and now we have to live up to expectations. It's time to get on that plane and not stop until next June.'
After this tournament, the team returns home to host the 24th annual Cal Golf Tournament at Orinda Country Club on September 15. The fundraising event will precede a trip to Washington on September 29-30 for the Husky Invitational.
