Volleyball Drops Second Straight Match At Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic
Sept. 4, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona volleyball team (2-3) did a lot of things right Thursday night, unfortunately it wasn't quite enough as No. 20 Santa Clara (2-1) handed the 10th-ranked Wildcats their second straight loss in the final match on the first day of the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic. Game scores 30-28, 21-30, 30-27, 32-30.
Looking at the final stats it appeared that nearly everything went the Wildcats way. Arizona out-hit the Broncos .339 to .332, posted 84 kills to SCU's 67, out-blocked them 12 to 6 and posted the same number of digs in the match. However it was the Broncos that came up with the big point time and again and answered each Arizona run with a burst of their own.
Individually, Santa Clara rode the shoulders of Becky Potter who tallied a team-high 20 kills on .410 hitting. Teammate Toni Muratore added 15 more kills on .444 hitting, while Jac Heler, Cassie Perret and Becky Biniek all chipped in with nine kills apiece. Heler also posted a match-high 12 digs for the victorious Broncos.
On the other side of the net, five Wildcats finished in double figure kills, four of whom hit .300 or better. Arizona's trio of sophomores did their best to stave off the Broncos. Jennifer Abernathy had career-high 18 kills on 34 swings with just four errors for a .412 hitting percentage, another career-best. Classmate Kim Glass finished with a match-high 22 kills on .320 hitting while Bre Ladd chipped in 17 more on .379 hitting. Junior Jolene Killough and freshman Kristina Baum each posted 11 kills in the losing effort.
Much like its first match of the day, Arizona hurt itself on serve in the first game, committing eight errors in the frame. The service trouble didn't ended there, however, as UA posted nine more miscues on serve over the next three games.
Arizona returns to action in the Wildcat Classic on Friday with a 7:30 pm match up with undefeated Miami. The Hurricanes defeated Rhode Island 3-1 on Thursday to improve to 4-0 on the season.
