Volleyball's Winning Streak Ends With Loss To Fresno State
Sept. 6, 2003
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oregon State's six-match winning streak to start the season came to a close Saturday afternoon when the Fresno State volleyball team defeated the Beavers in four games at the Sacramento State Invitational. Game scores were 22-30, 30-26, 30-24, and 30-21.
'We actually played really well. It was a great match of adjustments and counter-adjustments,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'They just did a little better than we did. They figured us out a little quicker. We've got to get better at making adjustments a little faster, because with rally scoring, you run out of time.'
Anne Watts-Roberts led the Beavers (6-1) with 12 kills, but no other OSU players managed double figures. Fresno State's Kristen Fenton hit .300 and led all players with 22 kills. The Bulldogs (5-1) hit .249 and had 68 kills, while the Beavers hit .155 with 52 kills.
The Bulldogs also won the defensive match-up, outdigging (79-71) and outblocking (13-9) OSU. Fresno's Tuli Peters had a match-high 22 digs, with Allison Lawrence leading OSU with 15. Karah Rhoades (14), K.C. Frederic (13) and Katelyn Healy (11) also registered double digits in the dig column. Healy led OSU's blocking effort with a career-high five blocks, one solo and four assisted.
The Beavers wrap up competition at the Sacramento State Invitational against the host Hornets at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
