Wildcat Cross Country Sweeps Team Titles at UC Irvine Invitational

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's cross country teams swept the team titles at the UCI/J.L. Design Enterprises Invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif. on Saturday. The Arizona men captured the title with 47 points, while the Wildcat women won with 45 points. Both squads were able to place the five scoring runners in the top 16.
The UA men were led by senior Kyle Goklish's second-place finish. Goklish covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:07.3. Goklish was the first of three seniors to cross the line in the top three spots for the Wildcats. The next Wildcat to cross the line was Matt McInvale. McInvale clocked a time of 25:24.3 in seventh place. Closely behind him was Eric Bohn, finishing ninth in 25:34.3.
The fourth man across for Arizona was Rio Rico native Eric Chavez, a freshman on the Wildcat squad. Chavez covered the course in 26:03.9 and finished 13th. The final scoring runner for the UA men was freshman Kenny Frank. Frank placed 16th in 26:07.1
The Wildcat women looked much-improved from last year's squad, which was almost completely composed of freshmen. Junior Beth Hoge led the way for the Wildcats with a third-place finish. She finished the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18:54.9. Sophomore Adrienne Goeller wasn't too far behind, finishing fifth in 19:03.5.
Senior Nicole Gurnicz showed that she is ready for a successful season with her ninth-place finish. Gurnicz covered the course in 19:26.6. Sophomore Michi Hirakawa-Wong was the fourth Wildcat across the line with a 12th-place finish in 19:33.0. Closing out the scoring for the UA women was sophomore Amber Steen in 16th place with a time of 19:39.2.
The women's squad was helped out by the contributions of freshman Karen Langdorf (31st, 20:11.9), sophomore Jen Ford (33rd, 20:17.6), junior Robin Tierney (35th, 20:21.1), and freshman Ashley Ippolito (41st, 20:35.4).
The Wildcats will take next weekend off in preparation for the only home meet of the season. The Dave Murray Invitational will take place on Friday, September 19 in Tucson, Ariz.
