Pilots Blank Beavers, 2-0
Oregon State was held to one shot on goal by the Portland Pilots in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon, as the Pilots captured a 2-0 win at Merlo Field.
Christopher Sanders' goal at the 11 minute, 46 second mark off a through-ball from Josh Simpson gave UP (2-2-0) an early 1-0 advantage.
The Pilots scored again 13 minutes later when Heath Pearce netted a shot from 25 yards to the right post off a setup from Miguel Guante.
'As a team, we didn't play with any heart or conviction, and didn't play with any energy,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'I'm very disappointed with our lack of response today.
'This week will be spent on getting after it and working hard. We need to find our desire to work.'
The 2-0 score mirrored the final outcome of the teams' 2002 NCAA College Cup match at Merlo Field; both goals were scored in the first half of that game as well, including an improbably long score from Pearce.
After opening the season with four matches on the road, OSU hosts the Diadora Classic Sept. 12 and 14 at Lorenz Field.
The Beavers tackle Gonzaga at 5 p.m. on Friday, and play St. Mary's on Sunday at 2 p.m. In Friday's first game, St. Mary's takes on Illinois-Chicago at 2:30 p.m., and UIC battles Gonzaga at noon on Sunday.
